Lagos -> Entertainment

Fuji Music:

What started out as a form of Islamic devotional music – when young Muslim singers known as ‘Ajiwere' took to singing in the streets early in the morning during the period of Ramadan fasting – has now become a popular form of entertainment particularly among the Muslims. The Fuli style of music has produced several notable musicians like Sikiru Ayinde Barrister, Alhaji Kolligto and Wasiu Ayinde Talazo. Though the music itself has progressed, the traditional rhythms have been maintained and youngsters can be seen dancing to it. In fact, the translation of a line in one popular song goes: “Anyone can dance to the rhythm of Fuji music”.

Disco Music:

This type of music has been made popular by American Africans returning to the country and, while locals are increasingly getting interested in this kind of dance and music, it is the immigrants who comprise the majority of its adherents. The younger generation is particularly attracted to the vibrant music and acrobatic movements, and now even Nigerian musicians have started experimenting with disco music. For those who are interested, Lagos has a large number of discotheques that provide entertaining music and dancing
